Tokunbo Central’s answer: commonly recommended options, depending on your skills and local rules:
- Health and care support: care assistant and support worker roles are in high demand in many countries and can lead to nursing or health careers.
- Warehouse and logistics: often well paid with overtime, especially night shifts.
- Delivery and driving: flexible, but check insurance, licence and vehicle costs first.
- Security and facilities: steady shifts and time to study.
- Retail and hospitality: good for building local references and confidence.
- Tutoring and admin temp work: uses your education and pays better per hour.
- Protect yourself: check you have the right to work and the right hours under your visa, get a written contract and payslips, and avoid cash-in-hand work.
- Keep the goal in sight: set aside hours every week for applications, courses and networking.
Your turn: what survival job did you do, and would you recommend it to a new arrival?
