Travel tips

What seasoned travellers do before every trip home.

Book December early

Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks for trips home, and fares climb fast. Start looking 4 to 6 months ahead.

Track your route

For other months, start watching 2 to 4 months before you fly. Tap Track route and we’ll let you know when the fare drops.

Be flexible on days and stops

Mid-week flights are often cheaper. One-stop routes through hubs like Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Casablanca, Istanbul, Doha or Dubai can beat nonstop fares.

Check the bag allowance

Many fares to Africa include two checked bags, but basic fares may include fewer. Check before you pack the provisions.

Passport, visa and vaccines

Many countries want at least six months left on your passport. Apply for visas or e-visas only on official government sites. Many African countries ask to see a yellow fever certificate on arrival.

Health and insurance

See a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before you go about malaria tablets and vaccines, and buy travel insurance that covers medical care.

Money on arrival

Carry some cash in newer, undamaged notes, tell your bank you are travelling and have a backup card.

Stay connected

An eSIM or local SIM is usually far cheaper than roaming. Keep digital and paper copies of your passport and tickets.
