Tokunbo Central’s answer: people who broke through share a similar playbook.
- Tailor your CV to local style: short, achievement-focused, no photo, date of birth or marital status in most countries.
- Get local references fast: volunteering, short contracts, temp agency work and internships all give you a local referee.
- Network on purpose: LinkedIn, professional associations, alumni groups, church and mosque networks, and African professional groups. Many roles are filled through referrals.
- Use bridging programmes: many countries run newcomer employment programmes, mentoring schemes and job clubs. Check your local government and settlement services.
- Get credentials recognised: for regulated professions (nursing, medicine, engineering, accounting, teaching), start the licensing process early.
- Apply widely, follow up politely and ask for feedback after interviews.
- Take a step back to step forward: a slightly lower role in your field can lead to promotion quickly once you are in.
