Is it the food, the noise, Sunday rice, the parties, the sun, or just being around family? Tell us what you miss most about home, and what you have found abroad that comes close.

Tokunbo Central’s answer: when Africans abroad answer this, the same themes come up again and again.

  • Family and community: being around parents, siblings, cousins and neighbours, and the feeling that someone always has your back.
  • Food: fresh pepper, roadside suya, puff-puff, street corn and cooking that tastes right because the ingredients are fresh.
  • Celebrations: weddings, owambes and festivals where everyone shows up.
  • Sunshine and outdoor life.
  • Respect and recognition: being known in your area and treated as somebody.
  • How people cope: regular video calls, cooking home food on weekends, joining African churches, mosques and associations, and travelling home when they can.

Your turn: what do you miss most, and what is the closest thing to home you have found where you live now?
