Coming from Lagos, Accra or Nairobi, the first winter abroad can be brutal. What clothes do you actually need, how do you keep heating bills down, and how do you stay well through the dark months?

Tokunbo Central’s answer: people who have survived many winters agree on these basics.
- Layer, do not just buy one big coat: a thermal base layer, a warm sweater or fleece, then a windproof, waterproof coat. Add a hat, gloves, scarf and thick socks.
- Boots matter: waterproof boots with good grip prevent falls on ice.
- Buy smart: end-of-season sales, charity shops and second-hand apps are full of good coats at a fraction of the price.
- Heating: learn your thermostat and timer, close curtains at dusk, block draughts under doors, and heat the rooms you use. Ask your landlord about insulation and radiators before you sign a lease.
- Bills: compare energy suppliers where you can, and ask about payment plans to spread winter costs.
- Health: many doctors recommend vitamin D in the darker months for people with darker skin; ask yours. Moisturise more, as indoor heating dries skin.
- Mood: short days affect many people. Daylight lamps, exercise and seeing friends help.
Your turn: which city are you in, and what is your number one winter survival tip?
