Tokunbo Central’s answer: laws on physical punishment differ by country, and some ban it completely. Check the official guidance where you live. Parents who have adapted recommend these methods:
- Clear rules and consequences: agree household rules and stick to the consequences every time.
- Take away privileges: screen time, outings or pocket money are common, effective consequences.
- Praise good behaviour: children repeat what gets attention.
- Time-out and calm talks: cool down first, then discuss what went wrong.
- Be consistent between parents and with grandparents or carers.
- Work with the school: teachers can support you when issues come up.
- Ask for help early: parenting classes and family support services are available in many areas and are not a sign of failure.
Your turn: what discipline method works best in your home? What did you have to unlearn?
