Once you move abroad, the calls start: school fees, hospital bills, rent, “just small something”. How do you support family back home without going broke or ruining relationships?

Tokunbo Central’s answer: this is one of the most discussed topics among Africans abroad. The advice that works best balances love with clear limits.
- Budget it like a bill: decide a fixed monthly or yearly amount for family support and do not go over it. When it is gone, it is gone.
- Explain your real costs: many people back home do not know about rent, tax, childcare and transport abroad. A calm, honest conversation reduces pressure.
- Prioritise needs over wants: health, education and emergencies first; parties and gadgets last.
- Pay directly: pay school fees or hospital bills straight to the institution instead of sending cash.
- Invest in independence: helping a relative start a small business or learn a skill can reduce repeated requests.
- Protect your own future: build an emergency fund and pension first. You cannot help anyone if you fall into debt.
- Saying no is allowed: a kind, firm “I can’t this month” protects you and the relationship.
Your turn: how do you manage family requests? Do you have a budget, a rule or a script that works?
