How to Avoid Rental, Job and Visa Scams When Relocating Abroad
Fake landlords, fake job offers, fake visa agents. Scammers target people preparing to move abroad. How do you protect yourself?
Helpful resources: Always check the official source. See official immigration sites and visa help on our Resources page.
Tokunbo Central’s answer: scammers rely on urgency and desperation. These warning signs and habits protect you.
- Rental red flags: rent far below market, a landlord “abroad” who cannot show the property, or requests to pay a deposit before a viewing or contract. Use video viewings with someone you trust and pay through traceable methods.
- Job red flags: offers without an interview, fees for “processing” or training, or contact from personal email addresses. Real employers do not charge you to hire you.
- Visa red flags: agents promising guaranteed visas, fast-track approvals or jobs that “come with” a visa for a fee. Apply through official government websites.
- Verify everything: check company registration, look up reviews and ask in community groups like Community.
- Never share passport scans or bank details with people you have not verified.
- If scammed: report it to the police and your bank immediately, and warn others.
Your turn: have you or someone you know been targeted by a relocation scam? Share the warning signs so others stay safe.
