Egusi vs Ogbono: Which Soup Wins?

Egusi vs Ogbono: Which Soup Wins?

If there is one question that can scatter a Nigerian dinner table, it is this: egusi or ogbono? Both are comfort food, both taste like home, but everyone has a side.

Egusi: rich, thick and full of attitude

Egusi announces itself. Ground melon seeds fried in palm oil with onions, crayfish and pepper, then loaded with leafy greens and assorted meat. It is the soup you make to spoil yourself or to impress someone.

  • Texture: thick and hearty, lumpy or smooth depending on how you cook it
  • Flexible: cook it fried, with tomatoes, or packed with vegetables
  • Crowd pleaser: even picky eaters usually love it
  • Protein: works with beef, goat meat, smoked turkey, stockfish, dried fish or catfish

Ogbono: smooth, drawy and comforting

Ogbono is calm. Made from ground wild mango seeds, it is soft, silky and stretchy. When it draws, your heart draws with it. It tastes like home on a rainy day.

  • Texture: smooth and slippery, almost no chewing needed
  • Flavour: deep and earthy, especially with smoked fish, stockfish and palm oil
  • Speed: cooks faster than egusi, a lifesaver on busy days
