Healthcare systems abroad are very different from home. How do you register with a doctor, what is covered, and how do you avoid surprise medical bills?

Tokunbo Central’s answer: every country’s system is different, so start with the official health service or your insurer. Advice that applies almost everywhere:
- Register early: sign up with a local doctor (GP or family doctor) as soon as you have an address. Waiting lists can be long.
- Understand your cover: public healthcare, workplace insurance, private insurance or visa health charges. Know what is included before you need it.
- Emergency vs urgent care: learn when to use emergency departments, urgent care, walk-in clinics and phone health lines.
- Bring medical records and a list of your medicines with dosages.
- Prescriptions: some medicines available over the counter at home need a prescription abroad.
- Ask about costs upfront wherever care is not free, and check bills carefully.
- Mental health counts: doctors can refer you for support.
Your turn: what surprised you most about healthcare where you live now?
