Your credit history from home usually does not count abroad, so you start from zero. Landlords, phone companies and lenders all check it. How do you build a good credit score quickly and safely?

Tokunbo Central’s answer: credit systems differ between the UK, Canada, the US, Europe and Australia, but the same habits build a good record almost everywhere.
- Get on the official records: register at your address where the system uses it (for example, the electoral register in the UK, if eligible) and keep your address consistent on all accounts.
- Open a local bank account early and keep it in good standing.
- Start with a starter or secured credit card: spend a small amount and pay it off in full every month.
- Pay every bill on time: phone contracts, utilities and rent in your name can all help.
- Keep usage low: use well under your credit limit, ideally less than a third.
- Avoid applying for lots of credit at once. Each application can leave a mark.
- Check your report for free through the official credit agencies or free apps in your country, and fix errors.
- Be patient: most people see real improvement within 6 to 12 months.
Your turn: how long did it take you to build a decent credit score, and what helped most?
