Fully funded scholarships exist, but they are competitive and scattered. Where do African students find real scholarships abroad, and what makes an application stand out?

Tokunbo Central’s answer: successful scholars recommend starting early and applying widely.
- Government scholarships: many governments fund international students, for example the UK’s Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships, Germany’s DAAD, and programmes run by other national governments. Check official websites for current rounds.
- University scholarships: look at each university’s international scholarships page and ask the department directly about funded research positions.
- Foundation and pan-African programmes: private foundations and African institutions fund many master’s and PhD students.
- Research degrees: PhD and some research master’s places often come with funding through a supervisor’s grant.
- Stand out: a clear story, impact back home, strong references, and essays tailored to each scholarship’s goals.
- Start 12–18 months ahead because deadlines and test dates come early.
- Beware of scams: real scholarships do not charge application or processing fees.
