Tokunbo Central’s answer: community advice comes down to a few reliable routes, wherever you live:

  • African and Caribbean stores carry the widest range. Search maps for “African grocery” or “Afro Caribbean store” plus your city, and check our Tokunbo Directory grocery listings.
  • Asian, Indian and Latin American shops are cheaper for many basics: plantain, yam, cassava, okra, hot peppers, dried fish, palm oil (look for “red palm oil”) and hibiscus.
  • Big supermarkets now stock plantain, Scotch bonnets, sweet potatoes, okra and often garri or fufu flour in their world-food aisle.
  • Online African grocers deliver nationally in most countries; compare delivery fees and buy in bulk with friends to save.
  • Buy smart: stockfish, crayfish and dried leaves keep for months, so stock up when prices are good. Check expiry dates and smell palm oil before buying.
  • Community groups (church, mosque, association WhatsApp groups) often know who brings in fresh produce from home.

Your turn: name your city and the best place you have found for African foodstuff. Is it good value? What do you always buy there?
