This notice explains how Tokunbo Central handles information collected through iCount, the Global African Diaspora Count. iCount is a voluntary, independent community count. It is not an official census and is not connected to any government.
Who runs iCount
iCount is run by Tokunbo Central. You can contact us about iCount or your privacy at info@tokunbocentral.com.
What we collect
- Country you live in (required): to count participation by country.
- How you identify with the diaspora (required, with a “prefer not to say” option): for inclusive self-identification.
- African country or countries of heritage (optional): to understand which communities are represented.
- Age range (optional): for broad, combined insights.
- Email address (optional, only if you ask for updates): to send you news about iCount.
We do not ask for or collect your name, passport or ID numbers, immigration or visa status, date of birth, street address or identity documents. We only count adults aged 18 or over.
Each entry is stored with a random ID and the date you joined. We give you a private withdrawal code; we only store a scrambled (hashed) version of it. To prevent abuse, we briefly use a scrambled version of your internet address to limit repeat entries; it is deleted automatically within 24 hours and is not stored with your answers.
Why we use it, and our legal basis
We use count information only to produce combined statistics about the African diaspora who take part, such as totals by country, and to share those combined results publicly. Information about your African heritage may be treated as sensitive information in some countries. We only collect it with your explicit consent, which you give by ticking the consent box. Taking part is entirely voluntary, and you do not need to join to read Tokunbo Central.
What we publish
We only publish combined totals. Individual answers are never shown. Any country or group with fewer than 10 people is hidden or combined into “Other”, and we do not publish combinations of answers that could identify someone. We may include combined, non-identifying statistics in public reports or research.
Kept separate, never sold
- Count entries are stored separately from our newsletter, advertising, promotion bookings and any business records.
- Your update email, if you give one, is stored encrypted in a separate list and is not linked to your answers.
- Joining the count never adds you to advertising emails or SMS campaigns.
- We never sell your information.
Where it is stored and who can access it
Information is stored in our website database, hosted by our web hosting provider, Hostinger, and may be processed in a country other than yours. Connections to our site are encrypted (HTTPS). Access to the private data is limited to authorised Tokunbo Central administrators.
How long we keep it
We keep count entries for as long as iCount runs, and review whether we still need them at least every two years. Update emails are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Combined statistics that have already been published cannot identify you and may remain published.
Your choices and rights
- Withdraw: enter your private code on the iCount page to delete your entry, or email us.
- Stop updates: use the unsubscribe link in any update, or email us.
- Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or restrict use of your information, to withdraw consent at any time, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
Because we do not collect names, we may not be able to find an entry without your withdrawal code. If you have lost it, email us and we will help where we can.
Changes to this notice
If we change how iCount works, we will update this notice and the date above.
