Where One Chapter Ends, Another Begins.
Where the My Sasun story ends, the Tokunbo Central story begins.
Every great journey begins with a vision. Ours began with a simple idea: to bring a little piece of home closer to Africans living thousands of miles away.
In 2014, the idea that would eventually become My Sasun African Market was born. What began as a dream to make authentic African groceries and everyday essentials more accessible to Africans living abroad officially launched in 2016 and grew into an e-commerce platform serving thousands of households across the United States and Canada.
Over the years, My Sasun fulfilled more than 60,000 orders, connecting families to the familiar foods, flavors, and traditions that reminded them of home.
But as the business grew, something became increasingly clear.
Our people needed more than access to products from home. They needed connection, representation, community, and a sense of belonging.
We began to recognize that the immigrant experience was about so much more than what we missed from home. It was also about the lives we were building, the identities we were navigating, the challenges we faced, and the experiences we shared.
Through My Sasun, we explored ways to build those connections. From community events and memorable moments to cultural content, storytelling, and meaningful conversations, we sought to create opportunities for people to connect beyond the marketplace.
And through it all, one realization stood out:
There was a much bigger story to tell, and an even bigger community to bring together.
Eventually, the My Sasun chapter came to an end. But the purpose behind it never did.
Because while one chapter was closing, another was beginning.
And this time, the vision was bigger than bringing home to your doorstep.
It was about creating a place where you could feel at home, wherever life had taken you.
Welcome to Tokunbo Central
African Roots. Global Living. The Best of Both Worlds.
Tokunbo Central was born from a simple belief: distance should never disconnect us from our roots, our identity, or one another.
We are more than a media outlet. We are a community-centered platform built specifically for Africans navigating life beyond the continent.
Whether you call the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Mexico, Germany, or anywhere else in the world home, this space was created with you in mind.
We understand that living abroad comes with its own unique experiences.
There is the excitement of new opportunities, the pride of building something meaningful, and the joy of discovering new cultures. But there are also moments of uncertainty, cultural adjustments, identity struggles, homesickness, and the everyday realities that only someone who has walked a similar path can truly understand.
There is the challenge of balancing the traditions we grew up with and the cultures we now live in.
There are children growing up between two worlds, families preserving their heritage across generations, and individuals redefining what it means to belong.
And somewhere in the middle of all these experiences is a vibrant, diverse, resilient community with countless stories worth sharing.
That is the community Tokunbo Central exists to celebrate, inform, inspire, and connect.
Our Mission: Making Everywhere Feel a Little More Like Home
Our mission is simple:
To make Africans living abroad feel informed, represented, connected, and at home, wherever they are in the world.
We bring this mission to life through the stories we share, the conversations we encourage, the voices we amplify, and the communities we celebrate.
We shine a light on the pioneers breaking barriers, the innovators creating opportunities, the entrepreneurs building remarkable businesses, and the everyday people whose experiences remind us of our collective strength.
We celebrate our culture through food, fashion, music, traditions, entertainment, and, of course, the unforgettable excitement of an African owambe.
We explore the realities of diaspora living, from careers, parenting, relationships, wellness, and financial growth to immigration experiences, cultural identity, and the issues shaping our communities.
We share news and information that matter to us, create room for meaningful conversations, celebrate our achievements, and embrace the humor and occasional wahala that make our experiences uniquely relatable.
But beyond the content, we want something more.
We want Tokunbo Central to become a place where a Nigerian living in Texas can see a story from a Ghanaian in London and recognize a shared experience. Where a Kenyan in Canada can be inspired by a Zimbabwean entrepreneur in Australia. Where our diverse backgrounds become bridges rather than boundaries.
Because while our languages, traditions, and journeys may differ, there is so much that connects us.
Rooted in Africa. Connected Across the World.
We believe that being African abroad is not about choosing between where we come from and where we are going.
It is about embracing both.
It is about preserving the beauty of our heritage while creating space for new experiences, new opportunities, and new identities.
We can celebrate our roots and still embrace the places we now call home.
We can honor our traditions while learning from the cultures around us.
We can belong to more than one place without losing ourselves in the process.
That is what living the best of both worlds means to us.
And that is the spirit of Tokunbo Central.
This Is Our Story. But It’s Also Yours.
Our journey began with a mission to bring familiar products closer to home. Today, that mission has evolved into something much greater: bringing people closer to one another.
We believe our stories deserve to be told. Our experiences deserve to be understood. Our achievements deserve to be celebrated. And our voices deserve to be heard.
We are building a platform where you can see yourself reflected in the content you consume, discover opportunities, learn something new, share a laugh, find inspiration, and feel connected to a community that understands your journey.
Because home isn’t always just a place on a map.
Sometimes, home is a familiar story, a shared experience, a meaningful conversation, or simply the comfort of knowing that somewhere in the world, someone understands.
Wherever you are, however far you’ve traveled, and wherever life takes you next, there is a place for you here.
Welcome to Tokunbo Central.
Your stories. Your culture. Your community.
